Nerd Fitness Challenge Day 2 (posting late!)

I bet you thought I quit after the first day huh? NOPE! Just couldn't fit a post in on Friday due to some overnight work I had to do for my day job. While I didn't have a chance to post, I definitely  got some time in to program as well as exercise anyway! (if you're wondering what all this is, check out my first post here)


So this post will be about Day 2 and I'll follow-up this evening with a quick post to wrap-up day 3.


DAY 2
I spent some more time today going through my game 'loop' on paper, including some of the simple rules. I want to make sure I'm still moving forward in the programming side of things so I did a little bit of work there as well.

Colorful! In keeping with the rules of the game, each player will sit around a tablet, their space represented by a color. Eventually I hope to either allow for custom name input, or maybe a color/character select for each of the players.

Quick list recap of day 2:

  1. Sketched out game loop & basic rules. Already had this in my head for a while, but I had to expand on general ideas. I usually just dive right in to coding so I can get something on the screen, but I'll probably add more of a focus on charting things out on graph paper in the future. Definitely handy!
  2. Put in some color, just because. May as well work on something a little nicer looking.
  3. Added rough randomizer. One of the key features of this game is a strong system for selecting things randomly. Right now for testing I have it set so you can just tap the square green button and the game scrolls quickly through the blue squares in the  middle, eventually landing on a final one (you can see a highlighted red one in the image above).
Some good progress, but I think I'm going to have to trash and re-work my system for random selection. It's a very important part of the game but it's clunky and I know that there's got to be an easier way to do it. That will definitely see a lot of my focus over the course of this project. 



Fitness Stats (2/6):
Excercise: Weight lifting at the gym. Situps.

Just a note for my fitness stats. Friday night are usually my "cheat nights". I don't necessarily eat a TON, but just stuff that's worse for me. Tonight was chicken wings and beer. Great treat! Also to note, I am not going to track my regular walks with my dog but those happen daily.



Day 3 so far I've gotten some exercise in for the day (1.5 mile run). I've been having to do some work from home here and there today so I haven't gotten any programming in. But I'll have an update of some kind!
