Game Dev Update - Yeast Beast

Made a few additions to my new game "Yeast Beast" over the weekend. First is a slight update to the colors to make things a little easier on the eyes. The biggest additions are a particle system for the background bubbles, a new scoring system, and a high score board. Check out the video to see what's going on, and a description of it all below if you feel like reading more:

The score increases as you collect sugar, pretty standard, but the unique thing is that there is some additional scoring going on in the background. The more reactions you cause, the more you increase the "ABV" of the beer. In short, the higher your ABV, the better you did (and the more difficult the game gets).

While you see the main score increase as you play the game, your ABV score is not shown until the final score screen. I'm pretty proud of that part as I figured out a nice way to have the score "roll-up" to show you how high the alcohol content was at the end of the game. Doesn't look like much now, but I'm hoping to add cool effects to it once I get deeper in to improving the graphics. The goal is to create a nice, suspenseful but rewarding moment at the end of the game when you wait to see how alcoholic you made the beer.

I have a couple more small functions to add and messy code to fix up (including some collision code errors which you might have seen in the video) but besides that, it's a functional game!

Next big additions will be improved graphics, music, more SFX, and a more functional menu page with options other than just "start". I may look in to including some twitter/facebook social functionality as well just to get the practice. I'm also going to try and think of mobile controls to see if there is a possibility, but I hate on-screen buttons for reflexive games like this so I might just skip it this go around.

Anyway, that's my game update for the week!
